{ ushijima wakatoshi x reader }

For a moment, the third year does a double take. He pauses, mid-stride, and lets his other peers brush past his shoulders, eager to leave the containment field known as school. The familiar hair colour he sees was enough to be the chemical agent in his brain to make him freeze in the first place. A laugh was escaping her lips, her arms linked around the arm of her best friend, who they too, were laughing. He could pick that laugh out from anywhere, and so long as he heard it, he would be happy. It was all in slow motion, like the many movies they had once watched together.

Somehow, that hurt more than it should have.

But the pair of friends continue to walk, unbeknownst to the gaze on their backs. Mostly on her back, but even he knew that she was the most oblivious girl out there. He could spike the ball right next to her head (not on it, god no, that meant he might hurt her), let the loud echo ring in her ears, yet she would never, ever notice him again. Ushijima sighs, running a hand through his brown hair, letting the feeling of his calloused fingers through his hair distract him from her.

The name the lefty so desperately wants to call out bubbles in his throat until its a flat whisper, with no one around to hear it, and no one around who cares to hear it. The two friends were at their lockers now, and she kept laughing about something he doesn't know about. She looks happy, she looks so happy. He hasn't seen her look like that for a while.

Something green and disgusting grabs onto his heart, and he knows exactly what it is, but he says nothing about it, and he refuses to admit that he knows what it was.

Wakatoshi adjusts the book bag on his shoulder, and starts to walk, walk past his classroom, past the lockers, and then past the two. Her name bubbled in his throat again, but he forced it down in an attempt to keep whatever pride he had. His brown eyes flickered back to her form from the corner of his eyes, and for a moment, he saw her beautiful eyes flicker over to his taller form.

Whatever laughter soon fell from her lips, and as their best friend blabbered on, she didn't listen, her eyes solely on the form of the spiker. Silently, he begs her to do something, say anything. He doesn't know what, or why, but he knows that if she just says something, the pounding of his heart would stop, and he'll feel at peace for just a moment in time. It would mean more than just ignoring him.

And then their eyes lock.

When that happened, a chill went through his body. She wasn't oblivious. She wasn't oblivious at all. She had the gall to ignore him, after everything they had been through. A small smirk plays onto her face, as she turns back to her friend, vividly engaging in conversation with them, leaving Wakatoshi staring at her for a still moment in time, before he continues to walk.

And then he leaves.

---

They mention to her, as they walk home, that Ushijima had been glancing at them before he walked home, and the girl pauses mid stride, a fake look of confusion. Her best friend seemed to be the oblivious to their acting skills, only shrugging once, asking if she knew why. She shook her head once, continuing to walk to her small house.

The two hugged briefly, and they split, leaving the girl at her doorstep. She didn't actually go in, though. Her beautiful eyes were caught on the colours of the sunset in the sky, the colours enrapturing her.

"You're a horrible person. I waited so long for you and you don't even care. You only care about your stupid sport!" She cried out, poking the spiker in the chest. There was no look of regret on his face, only confusion. "You're no better than my brother! One day you're going to forget all about me, and I refuse to wait for that day. I waited for it with him, and he only has eyes for the sport. The exact goddamn same thing will happen to you, even if you do go to different schools."

"But..." Ushijima Wakatoshi shifted uncomfortably, holding the volleyball in his hands, twirling it around lightly.

"No! You don't get to speak!
People who do not care for me, but insist on making me wait, do not get to speak to me," she hissed out, in irritation. "Whatever. See if I care. Let the one person who cares about you walk away," she finally finished, before turning around. "Have fun with your little sport," she sneered.

A shiver ran down her back, as she tugged her book bag closer to herself. The last thing she wanted to do was turn into something like that again. And with that, she took her keys out, and unlocked the door, before finally,

she let the door shut behind her, a dull thud echoing in her mind.

fandom: haikyuu!!
universe: canon

reader: she/her
pov: third
triggers/summary: some kind of toxic relationship? / ushijima and reader had some kind of relationship (platonic or not, who knos) but "something" happened between them and he finds himself longing for her once again, but he thinks she's just too oblivious to notice it. he realizes, that she's not oblivious; she's just ignoring him.

the reader, though, has her own reasons for ignoring him, because, she knows that if they return to whatever relationship they had before, she'll only hurt him, and the last thing she wants to do is exactly that.

so i heard that :iconilluminasnox: birthday was in august (bc i skyped her, what a meme) and this is for her :~) for her and her bae bc she is the god of angst (i am only the ruler, bow down to her, and then me)
happy birthday darling!!

currently, for my other senpai, if you're reading this, i'm working on yours i swear!! i have a good portion done, and most of the plot set out, i just gotta work on it a bit more!!

extra points if you find out who her brother is, altho it's kind of obvious. also!!! the end is a metaphor amigo...its supposed to represent her turning her back on him for good. earlier she looked at him, meaning she was actually,,, thinking about,,,!! but she decided not to, and she knew she couldn't. reader isn't nessecarily a bad person, tho, just bc she was in a toxic relationship. she didn't realize what she was doing, as a lot of people who are toxic don't realize that they are just that: toxic. i'm kinda rambling but who knos?? yeah okay im dumb. sorry. enjoy. i do not own haikyuu or any of it's characters.

this is currently unbeta-ed. please feel free to let me know of any errors you see in a note or otherwise.
